The composition features three tritons, mythological figures half man and half fish, serving as the visual axis of the scene. The setting depicts a luminous landscape with lush trees in the background and a dry path reflecting the warmth of the Castilian climate. In the distance, several passersby appear to be enjoying a peaceful day of leisure in the Jardín de la Isla, evoking the serene atmosphere of courtly life at the time.
Velázquez’s palette here is composed of earthy greens and golden yellows, modulated with broad, loose brushstrokes that anticipate his celebrated mastery of atmosphere. In this painting, one can already perceive the distinctive technique of the Sevillian master — that way of “painting the air” which later critics would recognize as one of his greatest contributions to universal art.
This rural landscape depicts the famous Fountain of the Tritons, a white marble sculpture that is still preserved today and currently stands on one side of the Royal Palace of Madrid. When Diego Velázquez painted this canvas, around the mid-17th century, the fountain —by an unknown artist— was located in the gardens of the Royal Site of Aranjuez, a place that inspired the painter for its natural atmosphere and architectural harmony. It was relocated to its current position in the 19th century.
