The Young Beggar, Murillo

Also known as: "Boy picking a flea" Title in French: "Le Jeune Mendiant" On numerous occasions, Murillo portrayed children, and he did so with infants of all kinds: Saints in their earliest ages, little angels in religious allegories, and children in everyday scenes, as is the case here. This is one of the artist's most well-known non-religious works, where elements of the Baroque style are notably present, especially regarding the treatment of light, the chiaroscuro of the composition, where the child appears illuminated against a dark or very gloomy background.
